ROCK N ROLL PORTLAND or, HALF MARATON. MAY 19
My first Rock n Roll Half and the first race of year 2013!
And it was a good and bad one all at the same time.
I went with my mom up to Portland which is 2 hours from Eugene and stayed with my Aunt who lives there, so nice to not pay for a hotel and be with family that just goes above and beyond hospitality. So grateful!
We went to the expo first on Saturday (pics above of expo stuff) which I have never been to an expo before like that it was crazy!
Cheerleaders, music, shopping, freebies, giveaways, photo ops etc. I would have looked more but the parking lot was full so i had to run in and grab my stuff and run out! But managed to buy a cute Brooks half-zip.
That day I just hydrated and rested,I hadn't been feeling well all that week and Saturday my stomach was in knots all day.
Sunday was race day at 8 am! It had been pouring rain all day Saturday so I was nervous it would rain for the race but I bought a water proof iphone holder so i was set! We got there an hour early and looked around, the race was at the waterfront downtown so it was just lovely scenery of the city and everything. I was in corral 12 to finish at time 2:10:00 and felt good at that placement, I saw up to corral 23. I was so antsy for this race to start it was almost torture as they called the corrals out one by one doing 10 second countdowns. But finally it was my corral!
The race started out great, i easily jogged paced people going slower and walking for the first 5 miles. And then disaster started to strike. My compression shorts kept climbing up and I have a great inner thigh burn from it, I got a painful blister on my right foot which felt like a needle stabbing my toe the whole time, and hills. HILLS! 10 miles of hills!!! I got up one...and there was no down. Just a gentle curve into another hill followed by more and more. Well, there goes my time! I was doing so good!!! It wasn't until about my 8 I saw the 2:10 pace team go by me. Yes, go by me and I waved.
All my other races have been flat, I was expecting flat and i'm stupid. My fault entirely on not being prepared for hills.
So as my time got worse and worse at about mile 10 my heart decided to have a party without asking me. For some reason this year my heart has been doing arrhythmia's followed by a heaving chest and gasping for air, happened twice during my training and it just chose a bad time to strike again. So I had to walk and calm my heart down so I don't pass out, it made me so mad. It's really frustrating and has happened before, awhile ago when I was 18 I wore a heart monitor which showed no arrhythmia's at that time and they said it's just a thing my body does sometimes. Ok, I get that, but I feel like i'm going to pass out!! My heart is beating so fast and hard it physically is painful in my chest! This is not ok at all!! Walking a mile just really pissed me off, I wanted to do so good. It's one thing not training for hills but it's another when I can't control my heart. (but I'm going to doctor again and blah blah blah)
But I jogged the finish pitying myself and heard my Aunt yelling "RUN!" and I did which honestly helped I felt like crap and I knew I would finish it but I was upset.
The finish line party was great though! Which perked myself up as a stranger shook my hand and said "what an accomplishment!" yea i guess 13.1 miles is, but i still wanted to do better.
They where handing out Jamba Juice samples, bagels, bananas, chocolate milk, water, cliff bars I mean everything!! My arms where full of all this stuff by the end haha.
Although I didn't finish like I planned, I had a good time. It was a fun race with so much to see and do. Let's hope the Seattle one goes way better.

That was the course!!
Tips:
-Wear shorts you have practiced a long run in.
-Buy toe socks!! I wanted to, put it off, paid the price.
-Check if there are hills, and then practice hills.
-If you are having heart problems in training, it might happen during the race.
-If you do have a heart episode, protect yourself first, passing out and being disqualified is worse than a bad time.
-Have fun! These Rock N Roll races are full of fun.
-Great for a first time Half
Overall:
It was a fun race! The biggest Half i've done so far! I highly recommend these races for first time Half or Full runners or for people that want to walk the whole time. Great family event. This would be fun to also volunteer at! The Expo is amazing even if your not in the race.

moonlight 5, 5 mile race. springfield, or. june 1
Ok, I went a bit crazy with the whole costume thing but can you blame a girl?
This was my first time running outside in the dark and in a tutu!
It's the Moonlight 5 mile race around the Riverbend Sacred Heart hospital which the proceeds went to stoke victims and there families.
My racing friend Brandi volunteered at the event so that was fun to hangout with her before and after. I wanted to dress up for this one cuz why not! I found a great light-up tutu on Amazon for cheap and some light-up laces as well. My Princess Leia hoodie is white so it just matched! I think my tutu was the brightest thing there!
I took and Energy GU gel before, i have been practicing with them on runs longer than 3 miles to help with my blood sugar levels and electrolytes hoping that I wont have another heart racing episode. And it went well! Had no heart issues.
It wasn't very easy running in a tutu and my laces came apart through the run, but I never have my best times during races! But I always aim for under 10 min mile and finished strongly in this race! 659 people ran in this race i was tied at placing 227 or 226 with a time of 49:58! Hey it's under 50! Not bad for a tutu and failed laces! It felt good to pick up my speed towards the end, I think I passed by at least 10 people as I pushed myself instead of keeping a steady pace. I also passed by a guy wearing a superhero cape and in my head I couldn't help but think, "I wonder how he feels being passed by a girl in a tutu".
Tips:
-Practice running in a tutu. My kept falling down and eventually the batteries shook loose.
-Practice running in light-up laces....that don't come apart
-Wear light-up gear and have fun! It's a very flat easy course
Overall:
This is great beginners run if your looking for something between a 5k and a Half Marathon. It's a safe run at night, you don't have to worry about cars hitting you! It's flat so it can be a good PR race. There was only 1 water station and no bathrooms on the route, which I had to pee the whole time! It's odd running when you can't see your feet landing but not too bad! I highly recommend this race for new runners or people wanting to PR! Fun to do with friends!

rock n roll seattle wa, half marathon. june 22
Finished my second half marathon of 2013 and took home the Pacific Peaks challenge medal!
I felt great going into this half, i knew that what happened in Portland wouldn't happen again! I wouldn't let it! (and i got great allergy medicine)
It was warmer than Portland but cool in the morning which was great!
I was in coral 18, finished slower than I wanted to but I clocked in some fast miles!
I'm learning more and more about what works for me with these races every time I do them. I bought an Amphipod belt that has a pouch infront and 2 water bottles and it was great! I passed by all the water stations, which I hate using, so I really could focus more on myself. This was a flatter course than Portland but the last 3 miles to the finish was a steady incline...ugh. I just couldn't keep up a decent pace! And my poor toes...I run better in my Frees and I sacrificed toenails for it! But they hurt along the course. Oh to run a race where nothing hurts....
But it was a beautiful route! Running along the Space Needle, Safeco Field...we ran by a lake at one point. It was just a lovely route! Much better than Portland!
There where many flags along the course and the cheerleaders again! It was also Boston Marathon themed too, the Halfs wore blue number bibs and the Full's wore yellow, they also handed us remembering Boston rubber bracelets, which I have been wearing everyday! This was also the first race i've done where there was a full and a half! I think it helped seeing what a full marathoner looks like to ease my fear of doing a full! Like doing a half, all the different people that do them can make you feel that it's going to be ok! I hope I can do another one this year!!! Love you Seattle!
This was by-far my best race, the distance is getting better and better. When mile 9 was my "wall" i got to mile 9 and was thinking 'oh, mile 9 already??' which is great!!
This Seattle race sure gave me a renewed feeling of these races and I cant wait for more!!! This is a fun summer!!!

Tips:
-Try a water belt if you hate the water stations, i like the Amphipod brand
-Bring enough GU shots! I used 3
-The start time is 7 but at these RnR races it took me 30 min the get to the start
-Wear good shoes!!!
-Used anti-chafe stick and it works well
Overall:
-If you like Portland, Seattle is way better! Plan for crazy traffic though and just massive crowds! Portland was better organized that way. There are hills but not as bad as Portland. This would be a good course to PR at I think. Also good for beginners too. I would run this race again in a heart beat!!!

dirty dash eugene or, obstacle 5k. june 29
Another Dirty Dash under my belt!
And, my first ever consecutive race! Did it last year.
I also ran it with Brandi again and her boyfriend Trevor! We had a great time! No real team theme but I wore my American Flag tank top, camp hat and a headband that says "I'm just hear for the beer!"
I love this race, it was my first ever race and it has a type of sentimental value to it for me.
I felt like I wasn't as fit this year as last (I was in preparation for a fitness competition), but I did every obstacle and didn't forget to get my beer bracelet! Wahoo!
It was different this year than last too, I felt that it was easier with less hard obstacles and more fun ones.
Less haystacks, more mud pits, less wall climbs, a foam pit, less monkey bars, a tight-rope thing, and again no water at the water slide! wtf! And I guess there was a mud shooting thing too that wasn't working by the time we went through. We started at around 12:30.
But overall it was a blast! The Dirty Dash can't be un-fun! I saw allot more adults too this year than last...and allot more people hurting themselves! I saw like 4 people spraining ankles or worse by jumping off of obstacles. It's one of the easier obstacle 5k's but it's not a walk in the park.

Tips:
-Bring shoes you don't mind cleaning like crazy or donating (mine survived year 2!)
-Wear compressions shorts so mud doesn't get everywhere...
-It was hot so wear sun-screen! The mud helped cool us down
-Don't forget the beer bracelet!
-Bring lots of towels and extra clothes and shoes to change into after
-It's the easiest muddy 5k (that's not only for girls) but be prepared for a challenge if you don't lift weights!
Overall:
Have fun!!! If you want to PR and care about your time get into the first time-slot and stay in the front of the line. Crowds gather around the obstacles as it takes some people awhile to get over them, you will be waiting at some point. Don't get too anxious about the challenge of the obstacles, you can walk around them! But trying is good :). If you want a true challenge I think a Tough Mudder and Warrior Dash are a step above the Dirty Dash and the all women Mud Run or Dirty Girls (or whatever!) are easier than the Dirty Dash.

electric run portland or, fun 5k. july 13.
The Electric Run!!!!!
Literally been waiting like 6 months for this fun 5k and finally!
We where team Electrionca from Disney! We dressed as Tron Legacy characters with glowing discs.
Dressing up was really fun for this run, and there where some interesting costumes for sure!
We drove up to Portland pretty early, we wanted to get out packets then go out to dinner and hang around until the race began. We parked in the parking lot for the packet pickup and got out stuff which included a pair of glowing eye glasses and a blinking bracelet. We also bought some swag! I got a neon tank top while Brandi got a cute T-shirt and Trevor got the LED hoodie! sweet!
We took the bus/shuttle to Red Robbin and the bus was littered with Electric Runners! Every time a group got on you could just here up and down the bus "wooooooooo!!!!!" people where so pumped for this race!
We headed back with an hour left til the race started which was plenty of time! The corral area was kinda crazy! people where just in a massive group, not really sectioned off or anything just all huddled together kinda like cattle haha!
We easily made it to the early corral area I guess, people where getting in and out everywhere and no one minded. I thought it was kinda odd that people where so open with smoking weed right around the corrals...in the corrals...and during the race.
I'm all for a good time! But do it before! I felt bad because this was Mike's very first 5k! And he was like, 'is this normal?' no. it's not.
People where smoking cigarettes in the corral, during the race, smoking weed everywhere! And taking other drugs as well along the course...not to mention the drinking! The car next to us was tail-gaiting before and I kept hearing them yell 'i'm so drunk!!!! wooooo!!' and during the race you could see people walking with bottles with all kinds of booze mixtures.
I mean this is a family-friendly event.
We had a beer before the race so it's not like i'm a stick in the mud! But it was just out of control.
Both the Dirty Dash and Color Run which are fun 5k's aren't like this. Not at all.
It didn't ruin our time there but I wished it wasn't like that!!
The course was fun though! It was all on gravel which made it difficult to run, my ankles would roll now and then and people would just crowd around the light displays...some I think where mentally lost in them haha!
But I wished there where more light displays or lights along the course! And one of the features wasn't working...
The concert at the end was fun!
We got some good pics!
Getting out of the parking lot....oh man. took 2 hours!!! there was no one helping people get in and out of the parking lots so it was just a massive traffic jam.

-Wear every neon, light-up thing you wish!
-If you want to really run this, maybe wear a head light. Between the light displays it's pitch black!
-If you plan on bringing your kids...there are lots of drinking and drugs before, during and after.
-Arrive early and prepare yourself to leave late. We should've taken the bus!
-Bring snacks and water, we where there from 6:30-2:00 am...
Overall:
This was awesome!! So worth the long wait! I just love fun 5k's so this was a good one to add to the collection! I wouldn't bring kids to this event. Just come with an open mind! Enjoy the music and lights and costumes! The more friends the better!

huckleberry half, welches or. half marathon. august 10.
3rd Half Marathon of 2013 and the most beautiful I've ever ran.
This was the first year for this race and for being it's first time, it went great! You wouldn't even know!
I learned allot during this race...
#1) waking up at 3 am to drive 2 and a half hours is no fun. I was very under pre-pared.
#2) when writing down directions, make sure it's for the right place. Or be sure to leave an hour early so when you do get lost, like me, you will only be 30 min late.
#3) GU energy gels and hydration water tablets are nothing compared to be pissed at yourself for fuel.
#4) Not having time to stretch and relax and re-fuel after your race because your mom left dad's antibiotics in the car so you have to drive back home ASAP, is also no fun.
WITH THAT BEING SAID! I have never seen a more beautiful scenery for a race, and I would drive that distance again just to experience the early morning crisp air and mountains.
(1 thing I would suggest for next years race...better driving instructions and signs to where the race is!!)
I was 25 min late to the Half Marathon start time and ran with the 10k'ers until I broke off for the Half route, so I had to run it un-timed which wasn't that big of a deal but I did feel a sense of shame in myself for being so un-prepared.
But although I was late, lost, pissed and just wanting to go home, i still ran it and i'm really glad I did. This course was beautiful!!! The race "medals" are also my favorite so far, it's made from some type of wood and it smells really good! I like how the ribbon was the name and date of the race and that the back is also engraved too. They had bigfoot at the finish line to high-five you and take pictures at the end. Which I couldn't wait for...And they also had goodie bags for the halfers as well, which I forgot to grab...But the food at the end was great!!!! The best so far, with coffee, water, hydrating drinks, Huckleberries, huckleberry themed foods like cupcakes and cookies and so much! Loaves of bread! It was great!

Tips:
-Check and double check the address so you're not late
-Make sure you have time to relax before a long drive back, that nothing is left in the car
-Be sure you're prepared to race, that you have prepped everything before you head out
-It can be cooler in the morning in mountains so bring something you can toss or wrap around your waste
-Enjoy the food! Don't forget your gift bag!
Overall:
If you are horribly lost and know you're going to be late, don't panic!! Just go, ask if you can still race, and swallow your pride. Use that frustration to give you more energy! And just enjoy the lovely route. And get excited for good food after the race!!

Eugene women's half marathon, eugene or. august 25th 2013.
Today I made 2 goals. I PR'd and I ran non-stop for the first time in a half-marathon.
I can't believe I did it! The whole 13.1 miles of non-stop running. Through drinking and taking energy gels I never stopped. At mile 12 I started to cry because I knew I just achieved a major goal of mine. If I can run a half non-stop, then I can think about doing a full someday.
My first half was previously my best time (and it was actually this same route!) of 2:27 this race i finished in 2:11 getting so close to under 2 hours! I even got into the corral to finish at 1:48 or something around that time it was the 9 minute pace, which I stayed with them for 3 miles but I knew if I tried to stay with them longer I would have to walk. So I sadly watched that group go further, and further away from me. I felt sorry for myself for a bit but whatever! Who am I trying to prove but myself?? So I pushed that negativity to the side and kept on going my pace.
It also started to pour heavily, which was a first for me! Never ran in the rain like that before, but it wasn't bad. I was really glad I made sure my Body-Glide stick was on so I didn't chafe! But every time my foot landed I could hear and feel the water squishing out! But there was something so peaceful about running in the rain along the river that just felt good.
I know I'm slow, trust me I see heavier and older people passing me during these races all the time, but i'm not them. I'm me. I know my body and I know when to push myself and when to slow down. I'm a good runner, i'm a safe runner and most of all I just love to race and do these.

I absolutely love this course though, it's so scenic! At the finish line they had guys hand out your finisher charm on silver platters which made me feel like a princess! And they served mimosas and chocolate as well with many other snacks too. I wanted to take more pictures but it wouldn't stop raining and I didn't want to damage my phone anymore than i feared I had! I'm so grateful I bought an Amphipod phone arm holder, it's water proof! i saw many women with damaged phones and mp3 players that morning.
This was my best race, and I couldn't think of a better place to basically end my half-marathon running for being home in Oregon. Makes me a little sad! But I always accept a challenge.
Tips:
-Be sure to invest in water proof equipment even if the weather says it wont rain
-Even if you run slow, keep running and be proud of it!
-When running in the rain a visor would be good for keeping rain from your eyes, i spent allot of time wiping my face not knowing if it was rain or sweat.
Overall:
This was such a great course, it was completely flat but all cement. If it rains just keep going and hope that you took my advice on waterproof gear! So much fun doing a women's oriented run, I would love to do more! This race was a blessing to me, just achieving that goal when I didn't think I would do well (my training has gone way down) and completing my running journey in my hometown before I leave has been perfect.

oregon wine country half marathon, carlton or. september 1 2013
So i'm in love with Carlton, OR.
This had to be the most fun i've ever had at a race! I for once wasn't alone during a Half Marathon! My Aunt Katie is in a running/walking group called the Carlton Cruisers and she invited me to join them when i was with her for the Portland Rock n Roll Half Marathon.
I've never walked 13.1 miles but I loved it!
We talked almost the whole time and for once I wasn't consumed by fueling, breathing, pace, water, time etc. I was just enjoying the day! It was bit difficult seeing all the runners pas us, a voice inside my head was telling me "you need to be with them!" but I stayed by my Aunt's side helping her with her pace since this was the farthest she has gone.
The course started at one winery and ended at another, i find myself loving courses that finish and end in different places. And along the course there was some wine sampling! How fun!
The medals for this year are coasters as the medals for last year where wine-bottle toppers.
We finished in about 3:30:11 time which is along time to walk and walking isn't easy!!
After the course you pick-up your wine tasting glass which you keep and there where about 10 different wine booths you get samples from. Plenty of wine to buy! Not so much on the food department, if someone had a food booth that would probably rake in allot of money! The Carlton Cruiser team had a bench we all sat at and one of the ladies made the best mixed champagne drinks!! Grapefruit infused sorbet, basil sorbet, Guinness too....allot of drinking!
I have never been apart of a team like this and it made me really want to be apart of one! When we move to Florida I will for sure be looking into a fun group like this!!

Tips:
-When helping someone else with there first race be prepared to hold yourself back as you know you can do a better time, it's not about you!
-If you're going to be drinking after a race be sure you hydrate yourself and bring extra snack incase food isn't there!
-Have fun with a friend! Who cares about time! Relax!
Overall:
This is a great race for beginners! It was a bit hilly but not too bad at all! A section of it was gravel for about a mile so be prepared for that if you want to PR. This was such a lovely route if you want scenic it's ideal! And for wine lovers it doesn't get any better. I highly recommend this race and i want to do it next year even if I fly here!

Susan G. komen Race for the Cure, Eugene OR. October 6 2013
Did this race last year, the 5K so this year I chose to do the 8K!
I honestly hadn't really been training that much for this race, the constant pouring rain put a little break in that! So I was honestly nervous i'd do horrible during this race and even thought about not going! Whaaaaat!!
But i'm glad I did :) I kicked that 10 min pace in the butt averaging about 9:20 which I was so happy about!!! And I placed 5th in my age group!!
I think I would've even done better if my shoes didn't un-tie themselves and with my frozen hands it took me a long time to tie them AND I got a bad food allergy thursday night and i'm still recovering from it (thank god for no lines at the porta potties!)so i think I might have done even better!
But i'm happy :)
The route was really good and I debated just staying behind these 2 runners and keeping it at a safe pace and not really pushing myself but then i thought "no!" And i passed them, cooled down behind a stroller mom then passed her, got behind a group of 3 and cooled down then passed them, got behind a couple and passed them.....passed 2 more and i finished! I really picked up my pace towards the finish there was no one infront of me and I booked it!
One thing I did notice during this race (i think it's just how the course is set up) is some 8k-ers cutting there route short and instead of turing right to make a loop they took the 5k turn. CHEATING! I mean you have to really be not smart to miss it....there are not only signs but a man standing right infront of you saying which way to go. So I might have even placed 4th in my age group!! some people might have cheated!! That's one thing I don't like about loop style races is that it's so easy to cut it short and be all "look how great i did!!!" mmmmm hm.
But I was so happy to get under that 10 min pace who cares about cheaters!
And I saw Puddles after the race too! Got a picture with him last year so I really wanted another one :) He decided to push his hand in my face!! Wiped my nose on the wing haha.
Tips:
-Be sure to watch where you should be going, it's so frustrating when I truly care about how I place in my age group because you can win awards so please respect that and don't cheat!
-It was really cold!! I wish I wore gloves
-Double tie your laces so you don't have to stop and tie them!!
Overall:
Who doesn't love this race, it's one of the best races I think you can do! I love seeing people decked out in all pink! Even saw dogs in pink! And a few men in pink too. My Grandma Marilyn died of breast cancer, I never met her but she meant allot to my mommy so she means allot to me :) I know I wont be running this in Oregon next year but I want to do this one again for sure.

Ugly Sweater Run, 5k Beaverton OR. November 16 2013
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Mike and I did The Ugly Sweater Run in Beaverton OR at Griffith Park.
This was such a fun, festive and laid back run! I don't even think i'd call it a race really!
The packet pick up was at Sports Authority and the swag bag was really good. We got a winter hat with Ugly Sweater Run on it, a christmas mustache tattoo that I put on my neck like a mustache kiss! Christmas looking bibs and some good coupons!
*Note: If you need to buy shoes wait until you get your swag bag from a race, there will be coupons anywhere from 20% to 50% off a purchase.*
I was happy Mike was excited about this one! From the website it said there will be hot cocoa along the course, pictures with santa and 2 free Samuel Adams winter beers.
The race started at 10am and wasn't timed! So no chips. My Aunt dropped us off at like 15 min til the race started so we jumped into the beer wristlet line so we could get our beer and then stood in the crowd. They did waves which was good...gave us time to check out all the crazy christmas costumes! This race allowed dogs, kids and strollers which I loved. And once we started we ran on and off, Mike is still a beginner and doesn't really like running so he is a good sport! We stopped at some giant inflatable reindeer for a picture which i'm really glad we did because I didn't see Santa at all! Finding the photo booth areas after the race was kinda crazy...there was 1 hot cocoa stop halfway in the race and the poor volunteers couldn't make it fast enough for all the runners! So there was allot of standing around waiting. We got some but it was really hot and I didn't want to stand around waiting for it to cool. I saw some race photographers at the end so I hope we got some good race pics! And that was the last photographer I saw. We walked by a massive line of people that where waiting to get beer but I didn't see Santa! I saw one race pic opportunity but it was in the middle of the beer crowd line. Mike and I where doing some wine tasting after the race with my Aunt so we didn't hang around for the beer which was ok it stared pouring rain about 30 min after we finished. I really wish we got more fun pictures but I didn't really see anything!
Tips:
-Expect to be waiting around in lines for beer and pictures, wasn't greatly organized
-Wear the craziest christmas stuff you can find!!
-I wore makeup and did my hair since I knew this would be our christmas pictures for the year! Not a competitive run at all
Overall:
This is just for fun so I think this would be a great "test race" for a beginner who is new to races, it's very low-stress! And I think this is a great race for families and dog owners since allot of races don't allow dogs or strollers. I also recommend it for your friends that want fun pictures but hate running, you can walk the whole time and no one will care! Very walker friendly.

EWEB Run To Stay Warm, Half Marathon Eugene OR. November 24 2013
My goal PR died that morning.
I'm not sure what went wrong, where I went wrong, if it was just a random group of happenings...
I had few plans going into this Half: 1. I would dress cooly (i have been too warm during the group runs) 2. I would get the GU Roctaine gels instead of the normal ones (first time using rocatine) 3. I would cary less with me than ever before (no hydration belt just my fanny pack with gels)
I did great at the 11 mile run 2 weeks before the race but my ankle started acting up so I took time off from running. After that 11 miles it took my body about 4 days to fully recover from it. Mike and I had our Ugly Sweater Race saturday and sunday i planned on being home to do the last group run before the race but Mike got sick saturday and we ended up staying in Portland one more night. I did a small run monday but my ankle was killing me so I chose to take more time off from running, I figured i've done the training so I didn't want to push my luck. I went to the gym with Beth instead.
I read on a running blog that some one else who was having tummy problems with the normal GU gels tried the Roctaine version and it was fine, being stupid I just took the advice without doing a trial run with it (STUPID STUPID STUPID!). I ate pretty normally saturday, did nothing different then I have been for all the training runs. Slept ok and got up at 7am for the 9am race start. It's been colder the last 2 weeks since my last 11 mile long run but I knew I would be ok with what I had on (and i was right! i think...). We got there and I met-up with my group and gave them my water bottle for the half-way point and got in my corral smiling at Mike knowing I would PR today. I looked for the old guy I follow in our group runs but i didn't see him.
Started out like I planned, going at a pace and getting behind people til I knew I could pass them then I did. I was keeping my goal pace of 9:30 min miles and then at about mile 5...all hell broke loose.

On the left is my 11 mile run 2 weeks before the race which is the right.
My stomach went into full cramping mode, I could feel the gel that i took before the race (like usual) making it's way higher and higher into my throat. My stomach was so unsettled and to make matters worse my nose had become a snot making machine which thankfully i wore a long sleeve shirt that turned into my nose blowing sleeve. I blew my nose so much during that race it was bleeding. I saw the old man who I follow during our training runs pass me, and that also crapped his pants. I was glad I wasn't behind him for that. And then all the slower runnners from our group passed me and I knew it was bad. My stomach was cramping so much I couldn't run faster. I texted Mike at mile 10 and told him that I was fine but my stomach was bugging me so I had to run slower. I sprinted through the finish and was so bummed. I heard them call out that 2:25 time and my heart just sank.
Mike took me to breakfast as i texted all my running friends that I completely failed today and he got pancakes and i stared at mine. I couldn't drink anything but water, i took the smallest bite of food and my stomach lurched. I knew it was over.
We drove home and I had to make him pull over as I barfed outside the door. Memories of the Portland Rock n Roll Half flooded my mind. I was, and am, just so bummed. Look at my training times!!! Not one 11:53 mile or 10:55 in sight.
I can't believe this happened. I improved so much and I just feel like all of that went away.
All kinds of doubt crept into my mind, 'why am i still trying?' 'maybe this is a sign to give up' 'how can a run a full if a half is still hard?'
But in running and in life I can't see this as a failure, I know what I'm capable of and I know I will get that PR someday. And if first you don't succeed....
I think this race is a good reminder to not stop. To see how important training runs are and that I need a bit of a break which will happen with us moving across the US!

Portland Holiday Half, Half Marathon. December 15, Portland OR. 2013
My last race of 2013! And a Holiday Half was a good one to end this running year.
I'll do a 2013 run year re-cap on my homepage when I get to it!
This was a Foot Traffic race, and I have to say I really enjoyed this company. I love the bibs, the bling, the race shirt and the course. Compared to the Eugene Holiday Half this one blew it out of the Willamette River! (bad Oregon humor) An up-close view of the medal and bib is under the "Bibs and Bling" tab at the top of the page.
I woke up at 4am with very little sleep, I didn't train for this race I wasn't going for time at all. I just wanted to jog and enjoy the day! No stomach distress pleeeeease! My ugly seater made a come-back and I really like this sweater, got allot of compliments too! And I put some christmas bows on my shoes for more festive cheer. I'm really glad I bought a parking pass to be shuttled to the race and back, I'm not familiar with that area of Portland so parking alone would be hectic! I highly recommend it. My stomach nerves kicked in though as I got close to the parking lot, I'm not even racing for time! I was shaking so much I was having problems getting a full grip on the steering wheel and my teeth where chattering so hard, why you ask? I have pretty bad anxiety, racing has helped get over that fear but I still get antsy! But i parked about an hour before the 8 am start. The bus was great and easy! It was fun to hear all the chatter of runners around me, I went alone to this race I just wanted to run by myself so I could take my time and linger around. The bus dropped us off and I went straight to the port-potty line-up, there was no line! woo! And then made my way up the Adidas campus to the outside warmers. It was chilly but not bad. There was an inside area as well where they where playing christmas music and runners where just sitting and stretching everywhere!
The only hiccup about the race was the start line. The bag-check area was so backed up and it was flooding into the race-start area. There was also a 5k too that went at 8:15. I was standing by some people at the inflated pass and we where all just standing around 15 min to the start asking "where is the start?" there was so much congestion with the bag-check line, porta-poty line and Half start line that it was just a big crowd with no sign that said START. I heard the announcer asking the bag-check people to move over and I was like 'I think the start is over there...' and it was! just a mass of people with no direction at all. They kept asking us to push back it was so cramped but no one was listening. It didn't bug me too much but there was a clear sense of "what the heck?" And i saw two girls who accidentally went with the Half group took the 5k loop laugh just laughing at themselves. So pay attention to your race-bib color! One color was for the Half and one was for the 5k.
The course was lovely! (click on the picture to go to the website)

I thought it said the course was flat on the website but it was a bit hilly, a bit. Not at all like the Portland Rock and Roll Half that was very hilly! But I heard some people grumbling they hated hills. It was a very looped course, you ran back the way you came which I don't like that type of layout as much. You just run and stare at the people heading back and you're like 'nice outfit, makeup?! how is that old man kicking my butt? i like her pants...' i just find myself staring oddly or clapping...it's bizarre. I saw the elite runners pass us (at like mile 5 and they're on mile 10) i wanted to shout-out cat calls but that might be rude ;). I liked that they had plenty of fuel to pass out on the course and bathrooms seemed good too, same with water. It seemed they where going through water faster than they thought! At every water station I saw volunteers scrambling to make more Gatorade and just fills the tubs.
My stomach did start to kick in at about mile 9 (as usual) it seems to not like running over 1:30 minutes. So I walked more, I didn't want to barf on the way home so I took it easy and that was just fine. Allot of walkers and beginners on this course. That's one thing I like about Portland races they have such a diverse group of runners/walkers compared to Eugene. There where also groups of christmas carolers on the course which was cute! And a random person in a panda bear costume. I finished and Santa gave me my medal. I saw they where handing out Zico (?) coconut water but no water bottles! I could've gone upstairs to look for free drinks and food, i knew there was coffee and i had a beer ticket. But i just wanted to get on the 2 hour drive back home.
There was also allot of good photo-ops too!
Overall:
I really enjoyed this race. Compared to the Eugene Holiday Half in 2012 this one was hands-down better in every way. If you don't mind the drive it's much more festive. This would be a great first-time Half I heard many others after the race calling people saying "i did it!!! I finished!!!" there is also allot of places along the course for family/friends to cheer you on since its in a residential area. This is a fun race to go crazy with costumes i saw some pretty good ones! Lots of santa suits including some slutty santas! I highly recommend this race and If i was in Oregon during this time next year I would love to do it again!
